Can You Just Use the Dryer Outlet?
The cheapest possible EV charging setup uses an outlet you already have. When that actually works, and the three ways it goes wrong.

It is a reasonable question and it deserves a straight answer rather than a reflexive no. There is already a 240v outlet in the house, and an electric car charger is just something that plugs into one. Why pay for another?
Sometimes you should not. Here is when that holds and when it does not.
What you probably have
Most dryer outlets in Central Texas homes are on a 30-amp circuit. That limits you to 24 amps continuous under the 80 percent rule.
Most are the NEMA 14-30 connector, not the 14-50 that portable EV chargers typically expect. They look similar and are not interchangeable. Adapters exist and are the point at which people start making mistakes.
And in almost every house, the outlet is in a laundry room or a utility area, which is not where the car parks.
The three ways it goes wrong
Charging where the car is not. This is the practical killer. Even if everything electrical works, a charger in the laundry room does not help unless you are prepared to run a long extension arrangement to the driveway — which is exactly the sort of improvisation that produces heat and hazards. Manufacturers do not support it and neither do we.
Overloading an adapter chain. A 14-30 to 14-50 adapter physically lets a charger expecting 40 amps connect to a circuit rated for 24. A well-designed charger can be configured down to match. A misconfigured one, or a cheap adapter chain, is a circuit being asked for more than it can deliver — and that shows up as a hot connector rather than as a helpful error message.
The receptacle itself. This is the one people underestimate.
A dryer draws hard in bursts, for an hour, occasionally. An EV draws near its maximum continuously, for hours, most nights. That is a completely different duty cycle, and commodity receptacles fail under it in a recognisable way: contacts lose tension, resistance rises, the plug face discolours, and eventually something melts.
A dryer outlet installed in 1994 and used a few times a week was never specified for nightly sustained load. Before relying on one, it is worth having somebody actually look at it.
When it genuinely is fine
Three conditions, and if all three hold this is a sensible thing to do:
The outlet is in the garage or somewhere the car actually parks. Some houses do have a 240-volt outlet in the garage, often left by a previous workshop.
Your charger can be configured to the circuit’s rating and you have actually set it, rather than assuming.
The receptacle and circuit have been checked — the right connector, sound terminations, correct breaker, conductors in good condition.
If those hold, 24 amps continuous is a genuinely useful charge rate. For a commuter driving forty miles a day, it refills the day’s use several times over during a night. Speed is not the constraint people imagine.
Splitters
Devices that share one circuit between a dryer and a charger, interlocking so only one draws at a time, do exist in listed and reputable forms.
They are a reasonable interim step, particularly for renters or anyone not ready to commit to a dedicated circuit. Two honest limitations: the circuit is still 30 amps, so charging is still at the slower rate; and the outlet is still in the laundry room, so the location problem is unsolved.
What the dedicated circuit actually buys you
Position. The charger goes where the car is, which is most of the value.
Amperage. A dedicated 60-amp circuit supports 48 amps continuous, roughly double the dryer circuit.
Hardware specified for the job. Industrial-grade receptacle or a hardwired termination, correct GFCI arrangement, terminations torqued to specification.
The rebate, if you are on Austin Energy. This is the part that changes the arithmetic completely. The programme returns half the combined equipment and installation cost, up to a published cap, against a permitted install by a licensed electrician.
Which means the comparison is not “free outlet versus paid installation”. It is “free outlet in the wrong room, at half speed” versus “half-price installation in the right place, at full speed”.
Framed that way, the dryer outlet is usually the more expensive option — but it is a perfectly reasonable place to start while you decide.
