Hardwiring connects the charger directly to the branch circuit. No plug, no socket, no removable connection in the current path. For a unit that is going to stay where it is put, it is the better installation.

Why the connection type matters more than it sounds

An EV is an unusual load. It draws close to its ceiling for hours, repeatedly, for years. Most household 240-volt loads do not behave that way.

A plug-and-socket connection is a mechanical joint under spring tension. Sustained current heats it, heat relaxes the contact, relaxed contact raises resistance, and higher resistance produces more heat. That loop is why receptacle failures in EV service look the way they do — browning, then melting, usually at the plug face. Removing the joint removes the loop.

In this climate the loop runs faster. A garage in Round Rock in August is not a temperate environment, and terminations that were perfectly correct on installation day loosen across enough heat cycles. Hardwiring reduces the number of places that can happen.

Amperage

A hardwired unit can run at 48 amps continuous, and some above that, which no standard receptacle supports. That needs a 60-amp circuit and a service with genuine headroom behind it.

Whether you should is a separate question from whether you can. For a full-size electric truck that arrives home near empty, the higher rating is worth having. For a commuter car covering forty miles a day, a 32-amp circuit refills it several times over during a single night and the extra capacity does nothing except cost more in conductor.

The load calculation decides the ceiling. Your actual driving decides where inside that ceiling to commission.

Outdoor mounting

This is where hardwiring stops being a preference and starts being the answer.

An exterior position in Central Texas means direct afternoon sun for months, surface temperatures on a west-facing wall that will make a unit throttle, spring storms driving rain sideways at the enclosure, and a wide daily temperature swing that works any imperfect seal. A receptacle in that environment has a cover that gets opened and closed, a gasket that ages, and a socket that is exposed every time the plug comes out.

A hardwired unit is sealed at the entry and stays sealed. We use UV-stable conduit on exposed runs for the same reason — standard PVC on a south or west elevation here does not age gracefully.

A disconnect is provided where the adopted code or the mounting position requires one.

Carports, detached garages and long runs

Where the car parks away from the panel, the run length drives both the conductor size and the day’s work. Voltage drop is checked rather than assumed on anything long, because a circuit that is correct at the breaker and marginal at the charger will present as slow or intermittent charging that nobody can explain.

On the west side of the metro, a long run also means finding out where the limestone starts before quoting the trench. On the older central lots it means checking what the canopy protects before committing to a path.

Why hardwire instead of using an outlet?

Three reasons. You can run above 40 amps, which a receptacle cannot support. You remove the plug and socket, which is the component most likely to overheat under sustained EV load. And you avoid the receptacle GFCI requirement that sometimes argues with a charger's own internal fault detection. The trade is that the unit is no longer portable.

Can a hardwired charger be moved later?

Yes, though it is a job rather than an afternoon. The unit gets disconnected, a new circuit is run to the new position, and the old circuit is properly decommissioned at the panel rather than left live behind a blank plate. Worth planning the original position carefully instead.

Does hardwiring change what the rebate pays?

The Austin Energy programme covers equipment and installation together, so the connection method matters less than which unit you buy — the cap is higher for OCPP-compatible hardware. What does matter is that hard-wired charging stations specifically require a City of Austin permit and inspection, which is also the rebate's own condition.

What amperage should I hardwire at?

Whatever the load calculation supports, not whatever the unit's maximum happens to be. Forty-eight amps continuous needs a 60-amp circuit and real headroom in the service. Commissioning at a rating the panel cannot sustain is how you get a breaker that holds in March and trips in August.
