Chargers get moved for ordinary reasons. A garage gets rebuilt. A second car arrives and the original position now serves the wrong vehicle. A house is sold and the unit goes with it. A charger installed in a hurry ended up somewhere that has annoyed its owner every night since.
First, is the unit worth moving?
Before anything is quoted, the existing hardware gets assessed. Sometimes the honest advice is to leave it and buy new — if the unit is several generations old, has no connectivity, or the model has been discontinued to the point where parts are a problem, the relocation cost approaches the cost of current hardware that does more.
Where the unit is sound, moving it is straightforward and considerably cheaper than replacement. That is the common case and we will tell you which one you are in.
The route is what you are paying for
The unit is the same at either end. What changes is the path between the panel and the new position, and in this metro that path is the whole cost question.
A new route may cross ground the original one never touched. On the west side — Lakeway, West Lake Hills, Bee Cave, Dripping Springs — that can mean limestone within inches of grade where the old run was inside a wall. On the older central lots it can mean the protected root zone of a mature tree that the previous path happened to miss, which brings the tree ordinance into a job nobody expected it to touch.
So we survey the new route rather than assuming it mirrors the old one. A relocation quoted from a photograph is a quote that changes on the day.
Decommissioning the old circuit properly
This is the part that gets skipped, and it matters.
The abandoned circuit is disconnected at the panel, the breaker removed or clearly labelled as spare, and any opening blanked and made good. What should never happen is a live conductor dead-ending behind a cover plate for the next owner to find.
The original mounting position gets patched. Where the old run was surface conduit, it comes out rather than being left as decoration.
The second-car case, which often is not a relocation
Where the reason for moving is that a second EV now parks on the other side, the cheaper answer is frequently a second connector rather than a moved one.
Power sharing links two units so they divide the available capacity — full speed when one car is plugged in, reduced when both are, which almost never matters overnight. That avoids the relocation and avoids the service upgrade that two independent circuits might otherwise require.
We price that option alongside the move, because it is regularly the better outcome and it is not what people call about.
Rechecking the electrics
A longer run changes the voltage drop calculation, so conductor sizing is verified against the new distance rather than carried over. The unit is tested before and after. Where the scope requires it, the work is permitted and inspected through whichever authority covers the address.
