The Wall Connector is a hardwired Level 2 unit. Installed properly it is an excellent piece of hardware. The parts worth getting right are the amperage it is commissioned at, whether a second unit shares the circuit, and where it ends up on the wall.
Amperage is set by your panel, not by the box
The unit supports up to 48 amps continuous, which needs a 60-amp circuit behind it. Whether your house can give it that is a question about the service, not about the charger.
The load calculation answers it. Where the headroom is there, we commission at the full rating. Where it is not, the unit is commissioned lower — which is not a failure, it is the correct outcome. A connector running at 32 amps still refills a normal day’s driving overnight. The mistake is commissioning at a rating the service cannot actually sustain and discovering it in August, when the air conditioning is already carrying most of the panel.
Power sharing, and why it comes up so often here
Two EVs in one driveway is unremarkable in this metro. The instinct is to assume two chargers means two circuits and therefore a service upgrade.
Frequently it does not. Power sharing links multiple Wall Connectors so they negotiate between themselves and divide whatever capacity exists. Both cars charge more slowly when both are plugged in; a single car charges at full rate. Since almost nobody needs two full-size packs refilled simultaneously overnight, the practical cost is close to nothing — and the alternative is a service upgrade that brings your utility into the schedule and adds significantly to the bill.
We price this option before we price the upgrade, because it is usually the answer.
Placement
Charge ports sit in different places depending on the vehicle, and the way a car is habitually parked matters as much as where the panel is. A connector mounted for the shortest conduit run and the longest cable stretch is a decision you live with every night for years.
We set the position around the car and the parking habit, then work out the conduit. On exterior and carport mounts we also account for orientation: a west-facing wall in Central Texas reaches surface temperatures that will make a unit throttle on a July afternoon, and moving it a few feet into shade is free at installation time and impossible afterwards.
Commissioning
The unit is connected to Wi-Fi, updated, and configured before we leave — including the shared-circuit setup where a second connector is involved. Leaving a customer to pair the hardware themselves is a common shortcut and a poor one, because a unit that is not on the network does not receive firmware updates and cannot be diagnosed remotely later.
Permits and the rebate
Permitted and inspected through whichever authority covers the address — the City of Austin inside the city, otherwise one of four counties or an independent enclave with its own building department.
If Austin Energy serves the meter, that permit is also what makes the rebate claimable. The programme pays half the equipment and installation cost up to its cap, conditional on a licensed electrician and an inspected job. Choosing an unlicensed installer to save on labour reliably costs more than it saves.
