Round Rock is straightforward work for a specific reason: it sits on the easy side of both local variables. The ground is clay rather than rock, and the housing stock is new enough that the panel usually cooperates.
What it does not have is the rebate.
Why your neighbour gets money back and you do not
This is the most common question we field here, and the answer is a boundary that has nothing to do with city limits.
Round Rock is Oncor territory. Oncor is a delivery utility on the competitive retail market — it owns the meter and performs service upgrades, but it does not bill you. You choose a retail provider separately, which is why your bill has a company name on it that Oncor does not appear on.
Austin Energy is a municipal utility, and its home charging rebate is available to Austin Energy customers. Being fifteen miles up I-35 from a house that qualifies does not qualify you. There is no equivalent Oncor programme, and any installer implying otherwise is either confused or hoping you are.
The practical consequence is that the arithmetic here is simpler. There is no rebate to protect, so the permit is about the work being inspected rather than about eligibility. It still gets pulled.
The panel is usually fine
Forest Creek, Teravista, Behrens Ranch, Sonoma and Paloma Lake were largely built between the mid-nineties and the mid-2010s, with 200-amp services as standard and the panel typically on a garage wall a short run from where the car parks.
That combination — modern service, convenient panel, short run — is why installations here are among the least complicated we do. The load calculation usually confirms what the build year suggests rather than overturning it.
The exception is a house that has added load since completion. A pool, a second HVAC system, an outdoor kitchen or a workshop can consume the headroom the builder left. We run the calculation regardless, because assuming from the build year is how a quote gets revised on the day.
Clay, not rock
Round Rock sits east of the Balcones Fault, on Blackland Prairie clay. A trenched run to a detached garage or a pedestal is ordinary work here, without the rock saw that the same job requires in Lakeway or Bee Cave.
Clay has its own consideration. It swells and shrinks with moisture, and a slab that moves seasonally will shear rigid conduit that crosses a joint without an expansion allowance. That is a design detail rather than a cost problem, and it is why a run crossing from the house to a detached structure gets built with movement in mind.
Permits
Inside the city limits, the City of Round Rock issues the permit and schedules inspection. Addresses in unincorporated Williamson County go to the county instead, and the boundary is not always obvious from a street address, so we confirm before scheduling.
