Anderson Mill is where the panel becomes the main event. The housing here mostly dates from the 1970s and 1980s, and the services reflect what a household needed then.
The service is usually the constraint
A hundred or a hundred and twenty-five amps was a perfectly sensible service for a 1978 house with one air conditioning system, a gas range and no second cooling zone.
Set against a modern heat pump, an electric range that may have been added since, and a car that would like forty or forty-eight amps for several hours a night, it is tight. This is the neighbourhood where the load calculation most often reports a genuine shortfall rather than a comfortable margin.
The good news is that a shortfall is not automatically an upgrade. Three outcomes exist and all three are common here:
Where headroom exists, we add the circuit and nothing else changes. Where the gap is modest, a load-management device lets the charger use capacity that is available at night when the cooling load has dropped — this is frequently the right answer here and it costs a fraction of a new service. Where the service is genuinely the limit, the upgrade is real.
We would rather run the calculation and tell you which of the three you are in than quote the most expensive one by default.
Adjacent work worth knowing about
Panels of this vintage sometimes bring company. Grounding electrode arrangements that no longer satisfy the adopted code, service entrances extended rather than replaced, and occasionally panel brands with a poor safety record that are worth replacing on their own merits regardless of the charger.

Which authority permits it?
Anderson Mill straddles a jurisdictional line. Some addresses fall inside the City of Austin; others are in Williamson County. The boundary is not intuitive and mail here is not a reliable guide.
That determines who issues the permit and inspects the work, so we confirm it by address before scheduling.
Austin Energy supply, and the rebate
Austin Energy serves this area, which puts the home charging rebate in play — half the equipment and installation cost, up to a published cap, with the higher cap for OCPP-compatible hardware.
This matters more here than in most places, because the households most likely to need a panel upgrade are also the ones for whom recovering half the installation cost makes the biggest difference. The conditions are a licensed electrician and a permitted, inspected job.
Trees and ground
Mature canopy is common across these streets, and protected trees affect conduit routing where a run leaves the building. Northwest Austin also brings thin cover over limestone in places, so a trench to a detached structure is worth surveying rather than assuming.
