Pflugerville sits on the forgiving side of the fault line. Trenching here is trenching, not excavation, and it makes a real difference to what a detached-garage run costs compared with the same job on the western side of the metro.
The ground works with you
Pflugerville is east of the Balcones Fault on deep Blackland Prairie clay. There is no shallow limestone to cut through, so a run from the panel out to a detached structure, a pedestal or a second parking position is straightforward work with a trencher.
If you have been quoted for a similar job in Lakeway or Dripping Springs and found the numbers hard to reconcile, this is why. The conduit and the conductors are the same. The ground is not.
Clay brings its own detail rather than its own cost. Blackland soil swells and shrinks with the seasons, and a slab that moves will shear rigid conduit crossing a joint if no expansion allowance was built in. That is a design decision made at installation, and it is the reason a run between a house and a detached structure gets built to accommodate movement.
Which utility, and does the rebate reach here?
Pflugerville is largely Oncor territory, with Austin Energy serving parts of the area. The boundary follows service territory rather than the city limit, and it is not intuitive from a street address.
That distinction is worth more here than in most of the cities on this site, because it decides rebate eligibility. Austin Energy’s home charging programme returns half the equipment and installation cost up to a published cap — but only for Austin Energy customers. An Oncor-served address in the same city does not qualify, and there is no Oncor equivalent.
We read the provider name off your bill before quoting anything that depends on it. It is a thirty-second check that occasionally changes the effective price of the job by a four-figure sum.
Panels are generally ready
Falcon Pointe, Blackhawk, Avalon, Sorento and the rest of the post-1998 development came with 200-amp services and garage-wall panels. The load calculation usually confirms headroom rather than finding a shortfall.
The older core around Pfluger Park and the original town grid is where it is worth actually checking rather than assuming. That stock predates the subdivision boom and was built to a lighter electrical standard.
Charging for two cars
Two EVs per household is common in this corridor. Where the panel cannot support two independent circuits, power sharing between connectors divides the available capacity instead — full speed for a single car, reduced when both are plugged in, which almost never matters overnight. It is consistently cheaper than a service upgrade and it is worth pricing first.
Permits
The City of Pflugerville issues the permit and schedules the inspection. Addresses in unincorporated Travis County go to the county instead.
